Critical Illness

The costs a health plan was never designed to cover.

A serious diagnosis brings expenses that have nothing to do with medical billing: travel, time away from work, care at home, and the ordinary bills that keep arriving.

Overview

What this coverage does

Critical illness insurance pays a lump sum directly to you upon diagnosis of a condition covered by the contract — commonly heart attack, stroke, and certain cancers, among others.

The benefit is not tied to medical bills. It can be applied to deductibles, lost income, travel for treatment, childcare, or anything else the household needs during that period.

Coverage is defined narrowly. Which conditions qualify, at what severity, and under what waiting and survival provisions is determined entirely by the policy language.

Often appropriate when

  • A high-deductible health plan leaves real exposure
  • Time away from work would strain the household
  • Family history raises specific concerns
  • Savings are earmarked for other goals
  • Treatment would likely require travel
  • You want flexible funds rather than reimbursement

Considerations

What we weigh before recommending

Covered conditions

Definitions and severity thresholds vary meaningfully by carrier. The list matters less than how each item is defined.

Benefit amount

Sized to non-medical exposure — deductibles, lost income, travel — rather than an arbitrary round number.

Waiting and survival periods

Many contracts require a period between issue and diagnosis, or survival for a set number of days.

Partial benefits

Some conditions pay a percentage rather than the full amount. That schedule is reviewed line by line.

Recurrence provisions

Whether a second diagnosis can pay again, and under what conditions, differs sharply between policies.

Coordination

This is a supplement, not a substitute for health, disability, or life coverage. It fills a specific gap.

Questions

Commonly asked

Does this replace health insurance?
No. It pays cash on diagnosis and does not cover medical treatment. It works alongside a health plan, never instead of one.
What conditions are covered?
Only those defined in the policy, at the severity the policy specifies. We review the definitions with you before you apply.
How can the money be used?
At your discretion — deductibles, mortgage payments, travel, home care, or replacing a spouse's lost income while they provide care.
Is it worth it if I have savings?
Sometimes not. If reserves comfortably absorb the exposure, we will say so rather than sell a policy you do not need.

Product disclosure

Critical illness insurance is issued by insurance carriers, not by Gray Halstead Financial LLC. It is a limited benefit policy and is not comprehensive health insurance, major medical coverage, or a substitute for it. Benefits are payable only upon diagnosis of a covered condition that meets the policy's specific definitions and severity criteria, and may be subject to waiting periods, survival periods, pre-existing condition limitations, benefit reductions by age, and per-condition or lifetime maximums. Covered conditions, benefit amounts, and availability vary by carrier and state and are governed by the issued contract.

Product availability, features, and terms vary by carrier, state, and individual eligibility. Nothing on this page is a guarantee of coverage or a recommendation for your circumstances. Full regulatory language appears in our disclosures.
